BEST 2.0

About BEST 2.0

The overall objective of the BEST 2.0 program, supported by the European Commission's Directorate-General for International cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO), is to promote the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of ecosystem services, including ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation, as a basis for sustainable development in OCTs. The program has a specific focus on enabling, empowering and strengthening local authorities and civil society organisations which are committed to local development, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem services in OCTs.

Opportunities for Aruba

BEST 2.0 projects can be initiated  by a public or private body, actor or institution of which the activities include the protection and conservation of marine biodiversity. The OCTs of the European Union can apply for two types of BEST grants: small and medium. Small grants cover a sum between 50.000 and 100.000 euros. Medium grants cover amounts ranging from 100.000 to 400.000 euros.

The first call for proposals has been launched on 14 September 2015, however both the medium grants as the small grants for the Caribbean Region has ended in Spring of 2016. Nonetheless, Directie Natuur en Milieu together with TNO Caribbean received a grant under the BEST 2.0 fund to make the necessary preparations for implementation of the Aruba Marine Park.

Funding was possible for projects that promote:
• Conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems
• Sustainable use of ecosystem services and natural resources
• Ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation

The Office of EU and Kingdom relations (BEUK), subsequently Europe House Aruba, offers assistance to any organization that wants to apply for EU funding for a project that fits the description given above. For further information, visit the BEST 2.0 website via the link below.

At this moment there are no calls available under BEST 2.0. However, the Commission has agreed on an extension of the programme in 2019. Updates on BEST 2.0 top up will be published in due time.
